About South Mainland Shetland

The view from Sumburgh Head, looking north

Situated at the southern tip of Shetland, the Northernmost of the British Isles, Nordagerdi is an ideal base from which to explore the islands. Interesting sites to visit within a couple of miles of the cottage include the historic Jarlshof viking settlement, Old Scatness Broch excavations,
Jarlshof

Quendale Water Mill, and the Croft House Museum at Boddam.

For visitors interested in birdwatching, Nordagerdi is in a prime location, with the impressive seabird colony at Sumburgh Head close by, along with the renowned migrant hotspots of Grutness, Scatness, Sumburgh Lighthouse, Quendale and of course the Pool of Virkie, which really is on the doorstep!

Four of Shetland’s finest beaches, at Grutness, West Voe of Sumburgh, Quendale and Scousburgh, are close to the cottage. Local amenities include the restaurant and bar at Sumburgh Hotel, a shop and post office at Toab, and the larger shop and petrol station near Boddam. The cottage is close to a bus route which can take visitors to Lerwick and beyond.
